The fifth wall!
The ceiling, or as some designers refer to it – ‘the fifth wall’, is one of the most overlooked areas in an interior. I have to confess that even I have been misguided by the convention that ceilings should be painted white, and why shouldn’t they? White after all is the ultimate neutral, its clean, crisp and create spacial awareness. Ive alway been quite satisfied with white ceilings…. until I discovered the fun that can be had with colour! Now my first thought, probably like many others, was “Surely that would look slightly odd?” but the ceiling is most likely the largest expanse of uninterrupted space in a room, so its colour will greatly impact the rooms ambience. A room with a painted ceiling can add energy, personality and drama so why not make your accent wall the ceiling?
There are many benefits to painted ceilings. Firstly its a design statement, how many of your neighbours have a painted ceiling? It’s truly a unique idea and if your confident enough to do it then why not! Secondly it can create an illusion and make a large room feel cosier or a small room appear taller! Lastly, its a great way to add an unexpected colour to a space and highlight an architectural detail. The idea may seem quite daunting but be confident with your choice! Whether its a subtle colour or a vibrant hue that unexpected accent can really make a huge difference in your interiors. Still not convinced? Have a look at painted ceilings below!
